Millions of Americans have come of age leading up to the 2012 election, and many of them are apathetic about their newly earned right to vote. Many of my students (freshmen and sophomores at LMU) are not interested in the election, and are not planning to vote. To them, I have one thing to say:
Voting is the start AND end of your civic journey.
Many people have expressed that they are not following the issues and therefore feel no need to vote. I actually have respect for these folks, as they recognize that they are not educated voters. However, I would argue that most voters are not educated, especially in our polarized, opinionated, 24-hour news cycle, but that doesn’t keep them from voting.
Instead, I would compare voting to a gateway drug; it makes you want to get involved, want to learn more, and want to become an educated voter for the next election.
Vote! It is only the beginning of your civic journey as an American citizen.
